Mare Tranquillitatis - Lunar Mare
Mare Tranquillitatis is a lunar mare located on the Moon's near side, famous as the landing site of Apollo 11, the first manned mission to the Moon. The mare is a large, dark basaltic plain formed by ancient volcanic eruptions.
The mare has a diameter of approximately 873 kilometers and is surrounded by the Sea of Serenity to the northwest and the Sea of Fertility to the southeast.
Mare Tranquillitatis is estimated to be around 3.6 billion years old, and its relatively smooth surface is a result of lava flows that filled the basin after the impact.
